The Ministry of Education has a fabulous maths website called NZMaths. It has an excellent families and whānau section. Here are some of the pages.

There is another fabulous Maths website called NRich. This website offers ideas to really develop mathematical thinking. Many of the activities need just pencil and paper, paper only, or just brain-power! The ideas will often challenge adults as much as kids. It also has a Maths at Home section. Have fun exploring!

Simple activities you can do in the car

It sounds obvious, but young children really enjoy counting up to 10, 20 then 100, and also counting back from 10, 20 then 100 (and beyond!).

Next, chant skip-counting patterns for 2, 5 and 10. Once they are confident in these (often around 7 - 8 years old), extend to 3, 4, 6 and 9.

After that, chant times tables while you drive! Year 5 and 6 students will find maths easier and faster if they know their times tables. Teaching tips here.

Here are some great ways to practise basic facts.

Matific is a paid app, all our Year 4 - 6 tamariki are paid for by the school.
