rūma Rumaki Reo

Hokitika Primary School has three thriving Rūma Rumaki Reo (immersion classrooms), supported by kaiako (teachers), kaiārahi i te reo (language experts) and kaiāwhina (support staff). The classes are mixed-level, catering to tamariki from Years 0 to 6. We have a kaupapa of whanaungatanga - we're one family of learners.

Our Rūma Rumaki Reo are open to all tamariki. However, in recent years, due to demand, we have had to begin a waiting list. (This is the case for most kura in NZ who offer bilingual education).

Our Rumaki Reo are classified as Māori Immersion Level 2. This means te reo Māori is the language of communication, instruction and assessment. English is included as a minority language of communication. It’s not expected that all tamariki in the class will interact freely in te reo māori at first - these skills will develop over time. Note that in Māori Immersion Level 2 akomanga (classrooms), reading and writing is taught in te reo Māori (and not in English).

Our goals are to:

Kei konei ngā kaiako (here are the teachers).
